Transcript

[Narrator] Can I share my story with the Disability Royal Commission?

[Will, lawyer] Your Story Disability Legal Support is a free service for anyone who wants to share their story with the Disability Royal Commission.

[Narrator] Who can share their story with the Disability Royal Commission?

[Will, lawyer] Anyone can.

There's no age limit or specific requirement for being able to tell your story.

For people who are subject to guardianship proceedings or mental health orders, it is important to go and get legal advice about your specific circumstances.

For submissions or private sessions, there's no capacity test, like there might be, in normal legal proceedings.

[Narrator] Do I need to have evidence to prove my story?

[Will, lawyer]No, so your story is just your personal experience.

So, you don't need to prove the facts or provide evidence to prove any of the points in your story.

The Royal Commission just wants to know your truth.

[Narrator] Can I tell a story about something I saw happen to someone else?

[Will, lawyer] Yeah so, you can tell a story about something that happened to you, as well as something that happened to somebody else.

If you're going to be telling a story about someone else's experience, then it is important that you get their permission first.

There can be different submissions that have been made about the same events, but from different people with their different perspectives.

So, for example, a parent and a child with disability might both tell their story about their experience with the child's school, but for the parent they will be telling their perspective rather than the story on the child's behalf.

[Narrator] How can I find out more information?
